Therapeutic Touch is a compassionate holistic approach to helping others heal themselves. It is a consciously directed process of energy exchange with the intent to balance the human energy field to optimize self-healing. The goal of the technique is to help people relax, relieve their pain, and help them heal faster. Therapeutic Touch is thought to promote healing through restoring harmony to a person’s energy fields. Therapeutic Touch is used in many settings, including palliative care, hospitals, residences and rehabilitation centers. During the session treatment, the practitioner may place his or her hands lightly on the patient’s body or slightly above it. Therapeutic Touch is a healing practice, rather than a curing practice. The treatment is given over clothing. Therapeutic Touch is for people of all ages, from the very young to seniors, regardless of their state of health. Therapeutic Touch was developed in the early 1970’s through the pioneering work of Dolores Krieger, Ph.D, R.N., Professor Emerita, New York University and her mentor Dora Kunz, a natural born healer.
